Edgar Brandt Lamp
I have long been enthralled with the ironwork of master blacksmith Edgar Brandt. He and his staff produced some of the greatest ironwork of the Art Deco period, from gates and railings to simple items like a paperweight.
So when we were installing a beautiful forged railing in one of our clients homes I immediately spied this amazing Brandt lamp in his collection. He was kind enough to let me photograph and document the textures and construction of the lamp.
Back at the studio the forge fire was lit and we began a faithful reproduction of the original. I decided to make 2 changes, we would not copy the shade arms, as those style of shades are extremely difficult to source now. And secondly, I chose to increase the scale of the lamp by about 25%. The original was so small and cute, however I wanted our reproduction to be a bit more practical for daily use.
The lamp features a stunning gingko leaf motif accented by a beautiful spiral central to each of the 3 sides. This spiral was common in much of Brandts work and it was a fun piece to forge as well. The 3 main structural pieces all had a pronounced hammered bevel, finished with an attractive rivet attachment to the triangular base.
Currently this reproduction is available here on our web store. Edgar Brandt Lamp
It would make a fantastic addition to the right interior! Additionally, let us know if you have any Art Deco ironwork in need of repair or restoration, as Matthew Harris Studio takes great pride in preserving original work in a heirloom quality manner. We use all of the same tools and methods as the original craftsmen in Brandts studio would have.
