Sculptural Interior Staircase Railing

Every time one of our customers approaches me with a request to design a one of a kind project I get excited. Recently this happened through the request of the client’s architect and builder. They asked us to design an exquisite "artisan designed railing" for a lively and busy family home. It was important to all of this that the design speak in a way that few railings do, and that the final result include craftsmanship, fine details, and have a sculptural feeling. The following photos are a result of this request.

Here you can see the custom bronze patina that we finished this project with. Using a 3 part custom blend of waxes, we were able to create a one of a kind finish to suit our customers, and the interior designers color palette. This also facilitated a seamless finish as we were able to match the color perfectly at the splice joints. Given the fact that the project cascaded down 3 floors of the home we had to install the railing in 4 sections. Matching the color perfectly was an important part of the installation and the final product.

The design is very interwoven and we were able to use the intersections of many lines to incorporate an exquisite pass through detail. This was created by hand forging using traditional blacksmith methods of working. Other lines wove around and through one another playing with movements in different planes. This detailing and design is an integration of my sculptural work and architecture.

The bottom of the railing ended with the cap rail swooping down and onto the side of the stair stringer, thus creating a beginning and end to the sculptural feeling of the whole piece.

Here the complex geometry and layout of the total piece can be seen. Using both digital measuring, traditional layout, and custom fabrication jigs in the studio, we were able to fit the railing perfectly traveling down 3 floors of the home. As the head studio artist I oversee every project from design to a completed install, this insures that our work is not only beautiful but properly fitted in the space.
